The Living In Place Institute Idea Home For passageway doors, we are using 36 inch (~91 cm) solid core doors for full access by a wheelchair or walker, durability and sound resistance, with door levers for ease of operation, and ball bearing hinges that never need lubrication. In case someone falls against a door, all the doors in the Idea Home hinge away from a room unless there is another way in. And all doors in the home utilize lever-style door openers to make it easy to open with an elbow or fist, and these only need about 30 degrees of operation to help prevent one’s hand from sliding off the lever.
